How it works

How eBay charges UK private sellers

If you live in the UK and sell as a private seller, eBay doesn’t take a final value fee or a regulatory operating fee when your item sells, in every category except Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles (those have their own fees). Instead, the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee on top of your price.

FeeWho paysHow much
Final value feeSeller£0 (not vehicles)
Buyer Protection feeBuyer10p + 7% of the first £20 + 4% from £20 to £300 + 2% from £300 to £4,000, on the item price (not postage)
ListingsSeller300 free a month, then 35p each
International feeSeller3% of the total if it’s sent outside the UK
Promoted ListingsSeller, if usedThe ad rate you choose, on the total including postage, if it sells from the ad

eBay says these private seller fees include VAT at 20%. Promoted Listings fees may have VAT added. A business seller pays different fees: a final value fee by category plus a per-order fee.

Does eBay still charge private sellers fees in the UK?

Not when an item sells, for UK-based private sellers in every category except Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles. You can still pay for extras you choose: Promoted Listings, more than 300 listings in a month (35p each after that) and the 3% international fee on items sent abroad.

What is the eBay Buyer Protection fee?

A fee the buyer pays on top of your price when buying from a UK private seller: 10p, plus 7% of the item price up to £20, 4% of the part from £20 to £300 and 2% of the part from £300 to £4,000. It isn’t charged on postage, and it doesn’t come out of what you receive. On a £25 item it’s £1.70.

Is eBay’s Promoted Listings fee charged on postage?

Yes. The general ad rate is a percentage of the total sale amount, which includes postage, and it’s only charged if the item sells within 30 days of someone clicking the ad.

Am I a private seller or a business seller?

If you buy things to resell, or make things to sell, you’re likely trading, and eBay expects you to register as a business seller. GOV.UK explains when selling counts as trading. Business sellers pay different fees: try the eBay business fees calculator.
